Here is a Pond and water fall combination I built for my neighbors. This area had an old crab apple tree and dying grass in it. I first built the retaining wall and then dug out the pond foot print, built the water fall and placed the stones. 

After the pond was built and every thing settled, I went with the home owner and picked out some water plants and several fish.
